1 John is a letter written by a man who personally walked with Jesus. Because of John’s intimate relationship with Jesus, he doesn’t know of a relationship with Jesus that doesn’t lead to life change. Therefore, John tells his readers of the life changing affects of the Gospel. As John writes:

1 John 1:5-7

5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

John will show us that a genuine believer will look different than the rest of the world. They will live to glorify God and love others. They will strive to reflect the light of the Gospel as they abide in the finished work of Christ on their behalf.
